Faculty of Science
From our foundation forged in 1939, the Faculty of Science was the first of its kind in the territory and has grown by leaps and bounds over the decades – it now comprises six departments and school: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics & Actuarial Science, and is currently home to over 4,000 students and 150 academic staff. We have over 28,000 alumni from over 50 countries, thriving in versatile professions and all walks of life.
Relentlessly dedicated to the advancement of science, our top-notch academics keep pursuing the evolving body of interdisciplinary frontier knowledge that brings benefits to industry and society while inspiring our next generation of global leaders. According to Clarivate Analytics' Essential Science Indicators, on average around 18.3% of our professorial staff are amongst the top 1% of highly cited researchers. We also have eminent scholars recognised by world-renowned academies – we have 4 Hong Kong Academy of Sciences members, 6 Chinese Academy of Sciences members and and 8 members of foreign Science Academies.
Since its inception, the Faculty has made significant contributions to science education and research and introduced generations of inquisitive young minds to the wonders of science. We embrace ambitious strategic plans to strengthen our quality and leadership in both areas on a global scale.
