A Strong Foundation for a Devoted Speech Therapist
Many people dream of having a fulfilling and satisfying career. This is especially true for Lai Chung Him, Jason, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences [BSc(Sp&HearSc)] programme and currently a speech therapist at a private clinic. The experiences he had gained during his five years of studies have built a solid foundation for his career.
Jason decided to embark on this journey before the HKDSE result was released. He met a student who had studied the BSc(Sp&HearSc) programme and who shared about the occupation of speech therapist in a promotional event organised by HKU. Jason found this profession interesting and it matched his interest in both arts and science, as speech therapy involves both areas of knowledge. It has proven to be the best choice for him.
To Jason, providing speech therapy means serving clients with full dedication and understanding. This notion was strongly reinforced when he completed his placement in Wuhan, Mainland China with fellow classmates back in the third year. The placement for more than 10 days was demanding since they spent all the time meeting patients and planning the treatment after work. But it was highly fruitful and it broadened his horizons greatly: “Each case was unique that they all were memorable. The most memorable case that I encountered was a 3-year-old girl who had impaired ability in speaking and walking because of cerebral palsy. We learnt about her family background and designed treatment with the aid of affordable tools, so that they could continue the treatment at home. Through providing treatment, we were also indirectly comforting the patients’ families and people around them as their emotional burden could be relieved with our help.”
Jason also received the best poster presentation award in the annual dissertation presentation in 2019 for his project on Cantonese polysyllables. “It was quite stressful as it took me a whole year to recruit participants, contact relevant stakeholders and collect and analyse the data. Fortunately, positive attitude and dedication helped me accomplish all the complex tasks. I’m happy to have contributed to the research in Cantonese polysyllables, as there had been few research studies in this aspect. I’d like to thank my peers for their emotional support and the teachers at the Faculty for their patience and guidance.”
Other than studies, Jason was highly active in extra-curricular activities, some of which were initiated by himself. He organised a two-day charity fun fair with the help of his friend working in an NGO and fellow BSc(Sp&HearSc) students. The fair provided underprivileged children with lots of fun games and speech and language screening.
Even after graduation, Jason is still dedicated to professional services outside his full-time job. Currently serving as an executive committee member of the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists, he is responsible for organising meaningful events on raising public awareness and professional development. “We all can do something to contribute to the community. I’m glad to utilise my knowledge and help promote public awareness of speech therapy.” Jason added.
Looking back on his studies, Jason found the BSc(Sp&HearSc) programme enlightening: “The programme builds a solid foundation to help us become a good speech therapist with plenty of learning experiences like clinical visits, placements and experiential learning. All these can help you decide on the client groups and the setting you would like to focus on after graduation.”
Jason also has some tips for prospective students: “You may find out more about the profession before applying for the programme. For example, by joining the admission talks and the Information Day. You may also follow different social media accounts of the Faculty to gain insights into the students’ study life and what the occupation is about. The programme and career are so meaningful that they give you a high sense of satisfaction from helping others.”
