HKU conferred honorary degrees upon seven distinguished individuals, namely Professor Mo Yan, Professor BAI Chunli, Professor the Lord DARZI of Denham, Professor HU Chenming, Sir Paul Maxime NURSE, Professor ZHANG Yitang and Professor Lee S SHULMAN on April 14 at Loke Yew Hall, Main Building. As all the honorary graduates currently reside outside Hong Kong, they participated in the ceremony virtually for their conferment in light of the COVID-19 situation and travel constraints globally.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor Mo Yan - Doctor of Letters honoris causa

Professor Mo Yan is a renowned contemporary Chinese writer who has guided readers to the insightful reading journeys interweaving of history, reality and literary imagination. In recognition of his contributions to academia and world literature, the University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor BAI Chunli - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Being a distinguished physical chemist and scientist in nanotechnology, administrator, and scholar, Professor BAI Chunli has achieved remarkable accomplishments in research and academic leadership. The University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa in recognition of his contributions to academia and the world.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor HU Chenming - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor HU Chenming is internationally regarded as the Father of the 3D Transistor with the pioneering invention of Fin Field-effect Transistor (FinFET) technology, who has also dedicated to the advancement of semiconductors. To recognise his remarkable contributions, the University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor ZHANG Yitang - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor ZHANG Yitang is an internationally renowned mathematician with interest in number theory, who had proved a landmark theorem in the distribution of prime numbers. He has received the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa conferred from the University in recognition of his contributions to academia and the world.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor Lee S SHULMAN - Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa

As a world-renowned educational psychologist and educator, Professor Lee S SHULMAN has remarkably contributed to education and teacher training, as well as influenced generations of educators and students. In recognition of his contributions to academia and the world of education, the University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Professor the Lord DARZI of Denham - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor the Lord DARZI of Denham has dedicated efforts in global health and welfare of individuals as a world-renowned surgeon, teacher and researcher. In acknowledgment of his contributions to academia and global healthcare, the University conferred upon him the degree of
Doctor of Science honoris causa.

Conferment of the Honorary Degree upon Sir Paul Maxime NURSE - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Sir Paul Maxime NURSE is a geneticist and cell biologist who led to the discovery of protein molecules that control the division (duplication) of cells in the cell cycle. The University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa in recognition of his valuable contributions to the inspiring scientific discoveries and the world.
