By bringing the expertise of an environmental professional into her course design, Dr Chan enhances student learning by using a holistic approach for science education and enabling students to deliver impact through international reach, innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

As an art historian, Dr Koon brings arts into the classroom while taking students out of the classroom, as well as creating projects where students can discover and understand the art ecosystem and in turn make wider cultural contributions.

Dr Vengatesen believes in research-led, hands-on and field-based experiential education which brings together students from different disciplines to work on solution-based projects, creating opportunities for them to participate in field observation and understand real-world issues from nature.

Aiming to advance the professional education of speech-language therapists in Hong Kong, Dr Wong uses dialogic teaching to engage students in their learning journey, and helps students integrate theoretical knowledge in the classroom to real-life clinical practice through the use of authentic clinical cases, original video resources and simulated learning activities.

‘EmpowerU: A Cross-disciplinary, Community-led, Impact-based Teaching and Learning Platform’
The team created the EmpowerU platform through cross-faculty collaboration and aimed to create cross-cultural, immersive learning experiences where students learn in the classroom, apply that learning in a meaningful and practical way within the community, and gain even deeper understanding from their community engagement.

‘Continuing and Enhancing Field Trip Learning Experiences in the Online and Dual-mode Teaching Environment’
When face-to-face teaching and on-site field trips were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Coates created alternative methods to continue the field trips in an interactive and innovative way to introduce landscape students and others to urban and natural landscapes.

Ms Tavares has turned the obstacles facing teachers resulting from the coronavirus outbreak into opportunities and transformed the expected mode of teaching. ‘From Bed-side to Web-side: Transforming Teaching with Telemedicine’
To maintain clinical exposure for the students and to provide them with learning opportunities from real patient scenarios during the pandemic, Dr Tsang and his team have transformed conventional bed-side teaching to ‘web-side teaching’ using telemedicine techniques.

The programme brings together interdisciplinary expertise to support online learning of FinTech knowledge and insights at scale and across the world. Exploring innovative ways to amplify the value of the content, the team prompted students to explore FinTech-related questions, such as whether the rise of artificial intelligence and privacy issues will redefine the future FinTech landscape.

‘Evaluation on Students’ Clinical Competence after a Virtual Simulation Education Programme during COVID-19 Pandemic’
The team proposed a new pedagogy to aid students in acquiring clinical skills and experiences when face-to-face teaching and clinical practicum in face-to-face settings were suspended during the pandemic. As an alternative to clinical training modality, the team developed an online virtual simulation education programme for students to engage in activities and learn various clinical skills and nursing processes in a harm-free environment without time and physical constraints.

‘Remote Learning under First Principles of Instruction Framework Applied in the Course Integrated Design Project’
An online simulation programme was developed to enable remote learning and allow overseas students to build prototypes and local students to construct their prototypes through videos. Additionally, the team is also developing a resource hub on COVID-19 Engineering education practices in the Asia-Pacific area.

‘Digital Exhibition Space (DES)’
The creative e-learning platform – Digital Exhibition Space (DES) – brings students an immersive and interactive learning environment even in a virtual classroom setting. The system leverages different existing web technologies for a coherent workflow that runs on the HKU server and can be integrated with commonly used systems such as Moodle. The application of 3D technology also perfectly replicates the create-exhibit-and-visit experience, enabling students to curate a gallery and visit each other’s works via the platform.

The team aims to empower students to be knowledge creators, critical thinkers and responsible citizens. Through interdisciplinary training and student-led research, they encourage students to design their own inquisitive angle, and execute and publish their findings independently.
